Trafalgar Buildings Hotel
A major mixed-use transformation at Trafalgar Square delivering 400 hotel rooms and 1,000 sqm of retail for Criterion Capital.
The Trafalgar Buildings Hotel revitalises three historic listed buildings in one of the city’s most prominent locations. The design retains the character of the original facades while introducing a contemporary extension that unites the trio into a single, modern hotel. At street level, the refurbishment of the existing retail units will re-activate the street frontage, creating a more vibrant pedestrian experience and a unified appearance that enhances the overall setting.
A new central core is positioned within the former courtyard, providing efficient circulation and connecting all three buildings to meet the needs of a contemporary hospitality environment. Inside, level changes have been carefully resolved to create one coherent and efficient floorplate, improving both guest experience and operational flow.
The new extension facade draws inspiration from the surrounding mansard roofs, allowing the design to blend seamlessly into the existing roofscape while expressing a contemporary architectural language.
Every detail is approached with sensitivity — from the alignment of rooms with existing windows to the precise junctions between old and new — ensuring the architecture respects its heritage while delivering a refined, modern identity.
